Park Plaza Hotel Salem
Park Plaza Hotel Salem
The Park Plaza Hotel in Salem is one of the few star hotels there. There aren’t much star hotels in Salem when compared with big cities like Bangalore and Chennai. The Park Plaza is situated in the Bangalore-Salem Highway in Salem, it is a part of Rezidor Hotel Group.

Park Plaza Hotel

The Park Plaza hotel is strategically located on the Bangalore-Salem highway and no one would miss the sight of this hotel while driving through the highway. The Salem city is itself a central point for many trades happening between many major cities surrounding it, say Bangalore, Chennai or Madurai.

While in Park Plaza, we spent most of our time in the room, dining (buffet) and the swimming pool. The entire story here is about these three things.

As I was about to enter the room, I captured the above photograph, a sofa set, teapoys, telephone and news paper.

The Room

I took this photograph as I entered the room, when the bed was still unused. The room was spacious with lots of amenities like wardrobe, safety locker, executive chair, table, sofa, teapoy and of course clean toilet.

The Hill View

The best part in the room was the view of hills (I guess Yercaud) and coconut groves in between. No doubt, it was the highlight here.

Room Service & Lunch

Paneer Tikka
Paneer Tikka
We ordered food from the room and was delivered to us in no time. The room service staffs were polite and soft spoken. We ordered for jeera rice, mashroom muttor masala, paneer tikka, butter roti, dal fry and peanut masala. All were good, we had no complaints. The paneer tikka and jeera rice was exceptionally tasty and it was worth a try.
Jeera Rice
Jeera Rice
What I liked the most was the presentation of food. Check out the onions and peanut masala which was cleanly wrapped ensuring no compromise on quality. In a star hotel like this, quality matters more than quantity.
Onions
Onions
What am I seeing? Four pieces of onions, is it one for each of us? I know why! The onion prices in India have sky rocketed and these guys are controlling cost… I was kidding, you get more when you ask for it.
Peanut Masala
Peanut Masala
The peanut masala covered with thin plastic, we had to be extra cautious so that we don’t consume the plastic with peanut masala!

Coffee Maker

Coffee Maker
Quick Coffee Maker, Coffee & Tea Powders, Milk Powders & Sugar

The coffee maker was not actually a coffee maker. It was a portable electric water heater. Heat the water, mix milk powder, sugar and coffee powder into the hot water and your coffee is ready. I swear the coffee was just awesome; I became a fan of Nescafe Sunrise.

Snacks

Quick Snacks

The snacks was not complimentary, the price 2-3 times more than MRP. Ok for a star hotel like this. We didn’t bother to pick up one. However, the salted nuts would have made a great combination for any type of alcohol.

Salem is in Tamil Nadu, southern part of India. So it was more of Tamil and south Channels.

Dinner Buffet

Dining Hall
Dining Hall - Buffet Spreads
The main reason for us being here was the buffet. We did not come here for any business trip but to relax and have fun with some great food. The hotel had organized a South Indian Food Festival on the day we were there. I felt luckier as I get to taste the authentic south Indian delicacies’. But it turned to be a disappointment in another way – it was more of vegetarian than non-vegetarian.
Prawns Masala
Prawns Masala
The prawns masala was great, the chicken 65 was just average. I didn’t like the king fish fry there, I would rather appreciate the one you get in Kerala and Mangalore hotels. The Hyderabadi chicken biryani was worth a try.

Breakfast Buffet
South Indian VADA
Black Gram Vada (Ulundhavada)

The breakfast offered there was a mixture of southern Indian and western style. I guess the dosa, idli, vada, sambar and chutney is always there in the breakfast menu. The western included chicken sausage, pork salami, bread, cheese and baked beans. There were juices, fruits and desserts also.

Swimming Pool

Swimming Pool
Swimming Pool, Park Plaza, Salem, Tamil Nadu

Park Plaza Salem has decent swimming pool with bathing facilities. The swimming pool is divided in two, one portion dedicated for small children. There is no liquor or food served near the swimming pool and also there no life guard available. There was an in charge, may be a swimming expert, teaching children do’s and don’ts.
